Data supports the effectiveness of mentoring
Data supports the conclusion that youth supported by committed, responsible adults are more likely to make better decisions, engage in fewer risky behaviors, enjoy healthier relationships, graduate from high school, and succeed in achieving their goals.
The DuBois Study of 2002 measured 55 mentoring programs. The study suggests well designed mentoring programs that provide the following elements, like CfY's, have greatest impact:
Ongoing training for mentors
Structured activities for mentors and youth
Expectations for frequency of contact, mechanisms for support and involvement of parents and guardians
Monitoring overall program implementation.
According to the 2002 DuBois study, the most important factors for success in a mentoring program were:
Frequency of contact by mentors and students with the program
Emotional closeness between mentor and student
The duration of the match, or relationship, between mentors and students
Mentoring programs have been proven effective in supporting students to stay in school and finish their education. Research supports that the life consequences of not graduating are quite severe.

It's
such a gift to be included in my student's life, having her call
just to chat and share what's going on. Her relationships have improved
dramatically over the last year with parents, teachers, peers and
me.
- Christie, Mentor
Recently
relocated to Seattle, my mentoring experience with CFY gave me the
immediate connection to my new community and provided me with so
many new contacts, resources, and friends in such a short time frame.
Its been an amazing experience!
- Gerardo, Mentor
I've
gained a real sense of appreciation for the strength of these kids,
the unbelievable
obstacles they have overcome in their lives. These kids want to
succeed!
